Common Payment Gateways

Payment gateways are needed when a customer is done adding items to their cart and is ready to checkout. When they move on to the payment stage, a payment gateway is needed to process the credit card.

Authorize.Net

Authorize.net is currently available in more than 33 countries. It is one of the oldest and most trusted online payment gateway providers. It integrates seamlessly into WooCommerce and other e-commerce systems.

Payment Processing Fee: 2.90% + $0.30 for e-commerce and dropshipping stores.

PayPal

PayPal is the most commonly used payment gateway for ecommerce stores. It is an accepted payment gateway in more than 203 countries. It supports all prominent credit cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Citibank, and more

Payment Processing Fee: 3.49% + $0.49 (fixed)

Stripe

Stripe is a US-based payment gateway that is available in more than 25 countries. It supports all major credit cards, but it is mostly used in Canada, Australia, and United Kingdom. It offers WooCommerce integration as well.

Payment Processing Fee: 2.9% + $0.30 per successful transaction

2Checkout

From Startups to Fortune 500 companies, over 20,000 companies in over 180 countries use 2Checkout. Accepts all major credit cards, PayPal, and debit cards.

Payment Processing Fee: Multiple plans available on their website.

Payment Plugins

Payment plugins are programs in your website that communicate between the Payment Gateway and your website, processing the payment.

PayPal

The most common plugin for WooCommerce, J2Store, Virtuemart, BigCommerce and many other platforms. PayPal Pro allows you to take credit cards right on the site, instead of redirecting them to PayPal.

Authorize.Net

Authorize.Net is the most widely used plugin and comes with all e-commerce system. All you need is your credentials from your account, and you're taking credit cards.

Stripe

Stripe is not as common, but is being utilized more and more by businesses. Many e-commerce systems do not come standard with Stripe, so you may have to purchase additional plugins.

Square

Not as widely used, and is not a standard plugin for top e-commerce systems. Many of these systems offer a Square plugin for additional cost.

2Checkout

Common for International orders, many countries outside the USA use 2Checkout when others have issues with overseas credit cards.
